HYPOTHERMIC JOY

Well, the rain has set in in the sodden Pacific Northwest, which means lots of fires in the fireplace and many pots of coffee. We just finished editing our video for Sailor Down and it’s a doozy. Because of COVID times, we decided to do it entirely ourselves. A couple of weekends ago we drove to Astoria, Oregon, which is one of our favorite towns on the West Coast. We shot for three days straight. The first night we froze our lil’ botsies off on the completely deserted waterfront, shooting on the pier while the sea lions barked like crazy. We woke up in our kitschy motel to a Biden victory, and then we drove across the precipitous bridge to Washington, stopping at a place where Lewis and Clark got stuck for the winter, called “Dismal Nitch”, which would have been a great name for the record except we thought it might make it sound like a downer. We visited Seaview and a shipwreck called the Peter Iredale which looks like a Giacometti sculpture. Then we drove down the coast and stayed in a little cottage in Oceanside where they had a truly bizarre collection of craft store seashells with the tags still attached them littering the mantel, which we took full advantage of for the video. No set designer necessary. Pretty much the theme of the shoot was “hypothermia” and “near drowning” but we had an incredible time and got two videos out of it--the lyric video for Sunday Runner (which was the most cardio I have gotten all fall) and the more traditional “rock video” for Sailor Down. Big thanks to longtime pal and fashion designer Elizabeth Dye for the excellent idea of me wearing a secretary style blouse (known as an, ahem, “pussy bow”) and Brian wearing a snazzy used car salesman uniform, and also to Corky Devault for the sage editorial advice.
